The Craigslist Index : Olympic Tickets – September 12th 2009
With 5 months to go until the opening ceremonies we are starting to track Vancouver craigslist posts to help readers gauge the open marketplace for purchasing or selling Winter Olympic event tickets.
August 12th-September 12th, 2009
Tickets for sale: 46
Wanting to Buy: 0
Hockey Tickets for sale: 25
We recently posted some quarter final tickets on Craigslist for $200 and also asked whether a secondary market really even existed given that seat assignments and hard copy tickets are not available. First, here’s how well our ad fared:
Genuine Inquiries: 2
Here are the comments:
“I bought 6 months ago… (well I paid a small amount down) when the seller gets the tickets I will pay the rest. I got a great deal (if they actually exist)
I do have a signed agreement.”
“YOU ARE SO RIGHT WAIT TILL ALL THE SEATS COME OUT IN DEC THEN YOU CAN REALLY KNOW THE PRICES OF SEATS”
“I have sold some tickets for decent prices right now – have to wait for the right buyer. Risk in waiting is that the market will become flooded – i do not think it will be too much of an issue though.”

Sell your minor tickets now. Cross country and hockey not involving the US or Canada (particularly women) will be selling for a song in January as the various NOC officials dump their unsold tickets on the market. Most figure skating and US and Canada men’s hockey will still command a premium. If you are holding Closing Ceremony tickets, dump them soon. They will be selling for less than half face by the end of the Olympics.
