Olympic Torch Relay Officially Begins on October 22nd, 2009

September 16th, 2009

The Olympic Flame will be lit by the power of the sun’s rays on October 22 during a time-honoured ceremony almost 10,000 kilometres away in Olympia, site of the first Olympic Games in ancient Greece. Officials will present the flame to VANOC a week later in Athens’ Panathinaiko Stadium after a brief relay through Greece.

Sheltered in a security lantern, similar to a miner’s lantern, the Olympic Flame will embark on a trans-Atlantic flight to Canada on board a Canadian Armed Forces’ aircraft. Less than 24 hours later, it will arrive in Victoria, BC, where it is anticipated thousands will cheer on the starting point of the relay and enjoy the first community celebration.

After revisiting our previous post on how to carry the torch, RBC’s page is down and you have to go through 8 pages of Coke ads to find out their contest is over too:( From sources there are still a number of spots yet to be assigned but connections will be the key to land this coveted opportunity.

The Craigslist Index : Olympic Tickets – September 12th 2009

September 12th, 2009

With 5 months to go until the opening ceremonies we are starting to track Vancouver craigslist posts to help readers gauge the open marketplace for purchasing or selling Winter Olympic event tickets.
August 12th-September 12th, 2009

Tickets for sale: 46

Wanting to Buy: 0

Hockey Tickets for sale: 25

We recently posted some quarter final tickets on Craigslist for $200 and also asked whether a secondary market really even existed given that seat assignments and hard copy tickets are not available. First, here’s how well our ad fared:

Genuine Inquiries: 2

Here are the comments:

“I bought 6 months ago… (well I paid a small amount down) when the seller gets the tickets I will pay the rest. I got a great deal (if they actually exist) ;-) I do have a signed agreement.”

“YOU ARE SO RIGHT WAIT TILL ALL THE SEATS COME OUT IN DEC THEN YOU CAN REALLY KNOW THE PRICES OF SEATS”

“I have sold some tickets for decent prices right now – have to wait for the right buyer. Risk in waiting is that the market will become flooded – i do not think it will be too much of an issue though.”
